In popular culture, Voodoo is usually synonymous with “black magic.” Its practitioners are often portrayed as sorcerers. Voodoo is actually an age-old African religion adapted in the New World by slaves brought to colonies from different Western nations.
Like Voodoo, “zombie” is more complex than shown in popular culture. Whether portrayed as reanimated corpses or persons rendered mindless, they toil endlessly in plantation fields or sugar mills. For the past half century, zombies in popular culture have been cast as hordes of carnivorous, infectious fiends. That depiction, perhaps, is the unkindest cut of all.
But zombies do exist.
